(UPDATE: patent nr. 724842, July 1899)

Many expressions used in automotive speech are borrowed from the French language. Prise-direct is one of them and is -simply put- used when there’s a direct drive between the crankshaft and the propshaft, without a reduction from the gearbox. We have no clue as to why this house in a Rotterdam suburb is called prise-direct’, but were immediately intrigued when we saw it. Does your house have an ‘automotive’ name too? Why not let us know!
UPDATE by Thomas Rudolf:"The dutch pub is called Prise Direct, OK. But in French you have to write Prise Directe, because prise is a women word. Louis Renault was the invetor of the Prise Directe >>> Patent number 724842, 22 july 1899 applied for "Driving and speed changing mechanism for Motor-Vehicles" + Patent number 84133, 29 november 1901 for "Speed changing and clutch mechanisme for Motor-Vehicles""
