1899 De Dion Bouton by the Motor Manufacturing Company

Derek Magrath: "I am re-building an 1899 De Dion Bouton 2-1/4HP tricycle which has been in the same family from new. What makes it even more unusual is that it was made in England by the Motor Manufacturing Company of Coventry. It uses a combination of genuine De Dion parts and parts made under licence by MMC - the De Dion bade is displayed on the surface carburettor, and the crankcases have the MMC name (in full) cast into them.

One thing that is unique to the MMC is the badge or logo on the battery box. It's a rather fancy design and on this trike is incomplete. There are only a handful of MMC trikes in existence and few of the other owners or De Dion enthusiasts I have contacted have ever seen the design and none have a complete example. Can any of PreWarcar's readers help with a complete image of the badge so that I can have some waterslide transfers made? Assuming, of course, that none of them have a bundle of new old stock transfers on the shelf."

Oh, yes, Mr. McGrath-do please follow Mr. Holdens suggestion ! ( But perhaps your restoration does not include repainting, or maybe the present paint is a fairly modern colour).

I'm with Russell, preservation rather than restoration looks the way to go here.

A super early "oily rag" and personally I'd love to see it kept that way

Wow, what a great trike, fantastic it has been in the same family for 116 years.

I don't understand however why you would restore it, in its current condition it is a window into the history of the vehicle and a shinning example of what a well preserved early under lic auto was like, sure get a correct example of the badge and keep it with the trike but leave it as it is for future generation to marvel at!

Just my opinion

I also have a de Dion MMC of 1898 vintage. The main differences would appear to be that I have a 13/4 hp. engine and the pedal free wheel is in the diff.
I do not have a battery box badge and if you ever find one I would love to have a copy of it. Good luck.

My great grandfather built tricycles in Coventry at the turn of the century. They were called Progress and used MMC engines. The 1901 catalogue image I have is identical to your machine. I wonder if Progress built tricycles for MMC or maybe it was the other way round?
