1940 Alvis 4.3 Vanden Plas Razor edge saloon
Body No. 3686;
Chassis 14870;
Engine 15355;
Date of First Registration 17 04 1940
This chassis was built in September 1939 at a cost of £750. The car was intended for the London Motor Show in 1940. There were 106 4.3 chassis produced of which only three were Razor Edge Saloons. These were built just before production was curtailed because of the war. EVC 240 was the last Razor Edge Saloon, the penultimate 4.3 and the 6th from the last car to be despatched from the works before the war.
One of the other Razor Edge Saloons is still with Kenneth Boyle in Scotland and the other in Portugal with Louis Manuel C. Sousa Riberiro.
Some £200,000 has been spent by the current owner to put this car into simply the finset condition it can be restored to. The bills are simply eye watering to say the least with the major ones coming from noted Alvis experts Early Engineering.
The rare Vanden Plas razor edge coachwork is both elegant and rakish. The coachwork has been fully gone though with brand new ash framing where required exactly replicating the original. Finished in a metallic very close to Rolls Royce Tudor grey the car presents beautifully particularly close to sunset when the light picks up the cars beautiful flowing lines.
Inside we have the requisite beige connolly hides & edge bound Wilton carpets with everything being replaced during restoration. All woodowrk was of course removed & refinished to a mirror like gloss shine.
The car sits on wire wheels shod with new blockley tyres all round. A single side mount in its custom aluminium cover resides on the passnger runniing board. A large sunroof is also fitted that easily slides open allowing for semi Alfresco motoring when in warmer climes.
A massive history file comes with the car & was far too big to photograph in its entirety. There are also some interesting magazine articles on the car.
In its day this was a true 100 MPH car & is today needless to say entirely comfortable in modern traffic at modern day traffic speeds. The engine is smooth powerful & makes all the right noises. This is a car that wants for nnthing & is ready for immediate extended use.
