1934 Rolls Royce 20HP Kellner Brougham
Chassis Number: GRK3
Registration Number: DS7994
The last owner purchased this car in 1989 & it has resided with him ever since as part of a 50 or so car collection & now comes to market from his estate.
Coachwork is a stunning open fronted Brougham by noted coachbuilders Kellner of Paris built for the first owner; a Monsieur Cravens residing in Paris. Reputedly it passed from him to an actress who took the little Rolls with her to Holly wood where it resided for a number of years prior to being repatriated to the UK.
Paris during the Roaring Twenties was abuzz with the likes of Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Amedeo Modigliani and Josephine Baker. For those wishing to sample the French capital’s cultural delights there were few better ways of being chauffeured around than in one of Kellner’s decidedly elegant ‘Coupe de Ville’ creations. Unashamedly passenger-focused, the Parisian coachbuilder’s design was a true town carriage that harked back to the horsedrawn era. A motor show favourite, it graced Bentley, Bugatti, Hispano Suiza and Rolls-Royce chassis. According to the renowned Rolls-Royce historian and author John Fasal, chassis GRK3 was fitted with engine G1025 and put on test on 28th June 1924. Road registered as ‘NP 5462’ by Worcestershire County Council, it was earmarked for the ‘Export Department’ and despatched to Kellner of Paris where it was clothed with body number 16649.
The car is in the process of being fully serviced & having the rear wheel brakes adjusted by marque specialists Lee Kenworthy & Company. It was running well with a silent powerful engine & excellent oil pressure prior to going to Kenworthy's so we are excited to see how much better it runs once a full service & set up has been completed with new plugs pounts & leads etc.
The car has appeared in a number of films including Gosford Park (2001) Austenland (2013) along with a few less known productions. The rear of the car is carriage like in the extreme with comfortable west of England cloth to the seats & patterned material to the interior surfaces. A useful rimmed occasional table folds out of the bulkhead. The front is high quality buttoned black leather. Being an early 20 it has the lovely 3 speed gear box. Unusually the gear lever has a factory extension to the top of it making it fall readily to hand; only the second 20hp I have ever seen with such a factory modifiction.
The car is equipped with opera lights to the sides which come on when the ignition is on. A Kellner body number plaque is found outside behind the scuttle & a single side mount spare wheel to the other side. Recorded miles are 49307 at time of photography.
The car drives very very well with excellent oil pressure & a go anywhere feel to it. Residing in a 50 car collection as it did, it has seen very sparing use in the last four decades.
