1923 Peugeot Quadrilette Type 172 – Vintage French Light Car
A charming example of 1920s French motoring at its simplest, this 1923 Peugeot Quadrilette Type 172 is looking for a new custodian following a period of dry storage in a barn. It offers an appealing opportunity for an enthusiast seeking a vintage French light car to recommission and preserve.
The 670cc, four-cylinder, water-cooled engine runs and starts readily on the starting handle with the carburettor choke engaged. The three-speed gearbox is integral with the rear axle, an interesting feature of these lightweight Peugeots. The car has 26 × 3 beaded-edge wheels.
Although running, the Peugeot will require recommissioning and fettling before returning to the road, together with appropriate safety checks. It is offered as a running project, not a fully roadworthy vehicle.
The bodywork is tired, with repairs and patches accumulated over the years. Further sympathetic maintenance and body repairs will be required. This is a car for a custodian who appreciates an honest vintage project and is happy to undertake the work needed to preserve its character.
The car carries an age-related registration number appropriate to its period. The V5 registration document is with the car, together with a substantial file of accompanying documentation, including a photocopy of the Peugeot Type 172 manual.
Introduced in 1923, the Type 172 developed Peugeot’s earlier Quadrilette formula, with a wider track allowing its two occupants to sit side by side. These small, lightweight cars belong to the same movement towards simple, economical motoring that made the Austin Seven so familiar in Britain. The Quadrilette can therefore be viewed as a French counterpart in spirit, rather than an Austin-derived design.
An appealing prospect for anyone looking for a vintage light car to enjoy at Vintage Sports-Car Club (VSCC) events, subject to the relevant eligibility requirements and completion of the necessary recommissioning. Its small capacity and straightforward mechanical character offer an engaging introduction to 1920s light-car motoring.
A distinctive alternative to the more familiar British light cars of the period, this Peugeot Quadrilette is ready for its next chapter with an enthusiastic new custodian. The Gendarmes hat comes with the car!
The car is located at Gunn & Co. Get in touch for further details or to arrange a viewing of the car.
