"This is really going absolutely nowhere," was one of the phrases we heard last Saturday, which seemed to sum up the little event we'd booked ourselves into. We might have been going nowhere fast, but that's precisely why we were having such a fantastic time. The event in question was the ninth Festival of Slowth in Burgundy, in which some 30 noisy, slow and rather strange cars made their way through the French fields to some beautiful châteaux, with smiles spread across the faces of all the drivers as well as the inhabitants of the old villages, who didn't know what had hit them.
The drive was about 50 km on Saturday, which was quite a challenge for many cars. At each stop, many tools came out of their small boots to put them back into working order for the next challenge. At the lunch stop on Saturday, each car was sent down a small, bumpy track to undergo a tricky test, which was a lot of fun. The sunshine completed the happy scene.
Sunday's route was to a castle thousands of years old, where we were welcomed by some minstrels who might have stepped out of La Chanson de Roland. The cars sat gleaming among the trees and a glass of cold beer finished it off. There was also a parts fair here, which seemed to be a success. After lunch, everyone was free to make their way back home.
As always with old cars, and especially in France, it's not just the driving that makes the day so good. The stops were filled with talking, drinking and lots of eating, musing about our way of life and the strange cars around which it revolves, so maybe there is a proper purpose to the Slowth after all...
