A Good Recovery

1934 was a good year for German racing driver Rudolf Caracciola. The year before he had suffered a terrible crash and was still recovering when Mercedes signed him on to drive the new W25 racing car. They took a risk, as it wasn’t certain that “Rudi’ would be as quick as he used to be. He still walked with a stick when he made his comeback at the German Grand Prix in June and had to retire due to engine trouble. His first victory came -75 years ago tomorrow- on August 5th 1934 when he won the International Klausenpas Race setting a new record (click main pic). Although he died in 1959, Caracciola still has many fans and they will be delighted to hear that Hereford Vintage Auctions will auction tomorrow 22 original photos of the continental motor racing scene, including several of Caracciola at the Nurburgring, “Karratsch” on his 40th Birthday, with the Grosse Preis Von Deutschland in 1939 and as Europameister with Lang and Geyer on the autobahn. Find them at lot 154. (please note: main photo courtesy Daimler AG and not included in auction)
