A mysterious family holiday

This week’s mystery photograph is taken in Huy in the Walloon Region in the East of Belgium. The family in the photograph was there on holiday with their pre-war car. We do not really have any other additional information about the family nor the car.

Maybe you can help us. What do you think the pre-war car in the photograph is?

Photograph sent in by Piet Geirnaert.

Well, I don't know about that, because I'm not a '20s Fiat specialist, but the photo of a Tipo 507 'guida interna' (inside drive limousine) shows the same position of the hinge and a landaulet with the hinge on a different position (both photos from the same book on p.227). The coupé de ville is not a real photo and the hinge has been reduced to a thin line (artistic freedom?).

Excellent, Ariejan, now I believe we can consider this case as closed

Yes, Michael, I guess we can. The only thing is that I have to correct myself, because the coupé de vile is of course on 507 chassis too, and not 505 (a slip of the finger!).

This is a Coupé de Ville on 505 chassis as shown on p.226 of the Catalogo Bolaffi delle Fiat by Anselmi.

Thanks, Ariejan, very interesting.
So it appears the early 507 models from 1925 didn't feature the trim alongside the engine hood that is visible on practically all photos of existing Fiat 507s and that there also were versions where the trim was positioned differently like on Piet's photo, right?

Of course it is a Fiat, not a 503 or 509, but a 507 of 1925. You can check your Catalogo Bolaffi on p.226-227.

It was new to me that Fiat started producing the 507 already in 1925. Is it possible that these early versions looked different than the later ones? I am asking, since on all pictures of Fiat 507s I found on the internet, the engine hood is considerably higher - or put another way: the section above the trim is higher than the one between the trim and the upper ends of the louvres. On the picture of the car in question, however, the two sections appear to have the same size. Maybe you could just provide us a link to a photo of a Fiat 507 with the same features like the one from Piets collection.

I also considered it might be a Fiat 503 or 509 from the mid-1920s who sold very well across Europe back then. However, with these models the louvres always extend over the full length of the engine hood (refer to my prewar Fiat photo gallery: https://vorkriegs-klassiker-rundschau.blog/fiat-popular-cars-from-turin). I'd rather go for an American manufacturer...

I had that thought, too, but the wheels are wrong for any American make.
