A Mystery in the Dutch East Indies

We received the following message from Jan Roosenburg:

“This photograph was taken at the Braga weg in Bandung, Dutch East Indies. Can anyone identify the car with the AA number plate? The plate comes from the Kendu Residency on mid-Java, which includes Yogyakarta.”

Can anyone tell Jan more about the PreWarCar with number plate A A 2147?

not exactly true. Buick, in Flint, MI, USA, also manufactured right hand export models, while not all McLaughling Buicks were right hand drive, I do own one left hand drive. It is more probable though, to find McLaughlin Buicks in Commonwealth countries as it is the case of Bali taxi. I believe one advantage of Canadian factory was to avoid duties paid when exporting to Commonwealth countries

Buicks parked outside a hotel-restaurant: taxis, maybe? On neighbouring Bali, an entrepreneurial ex-princess used these soft-tops for her taxi business well into the mid 1930s, the Sporting News Magazine reported.

Re A.C., they were hardly viable car manufacturers during the 1930s; would its owners have taken over a coach-building operation, unless just for its equipment?

AC was owned by the Hurlock family in the 1930’s and built around 100 cars per year. They were quite good, I come across them in events for pre war cars. Unusual for those days was that they built their own bodies. They were also located in Thames Ditton, therefore it could well be that they bought Newns (Eagle) after WW II when they had both been building parts for the military.

A right hand drive Buick would be a Mclaughlin-Buick built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. All export Buicks were made there.

Many thanks, well done, a Buick Master it must be. Another question: the 1935 Brough Superior Alpine Grand Sports Supercharged straight six reputedly has a body by E.J. Newns (Eagle Coachworks) of Thames Ditton. However, we have not been able to find any proof of this, if anyone can help that would be superb. Also, does anyone know what happened to Newns, rumor has it that AC took them over, which would make sense.

Indeed it is 1928 Buick in the forefront. Radiator shell, fenders are correct, also the bullet shaped headlamps used in 1928 model year for the first time and radiator cap mascot. Bumper is probably one of aftermarket ones. Most likely it is Master Six - 5 passenger touring 28-55X / export model with RH steering or its Canadian mate, McLaughlin Buick. on 128" wheelbase. This model was also equipped with side mount spare.. The car looks quite big to be Standard Six, model 28-25.

It is a 1928 Buick Master 6 , it appears to have drum headlights, Buick used bell style headlamps in 1929.

1928 front fenders were unique to that year only.

The handsome phaeton In the foreground appears likely to be a mid 1920s Buick. The radiator and it’s badge fits, but the bumper seems alien.

It's a 1928 Buick, and there looks to be a Renault driving down the street.

Buick pre-1929. The car is probably right-hand drive, given that the majority of cars are being driven or parked on the left of the road.
