A mystery with Mr Illés in the back

This photograph comes from the archive of Hungarian journalist, Mr István Illés. He was the editor of Auto, the official magazine of the Hungarian Royal Automobile Club.

On the back is written, "with Malcolm Campbell". Sir Malcolm Campbell visited Budapest in 1931. But we must honestly say that we do not think it is him on the back seat of the car. But who is it then? We do know, that the man in the back with the bowler Mr Illés is, the Hungarian journalist. The people in the front, we do not know who they are.

Pal Negyesi who sent us the photograph guesses the car is a British Sunbeam. But after some research, he found out there was no Sunbeam registered in Hungary in 1931. But of course, does not mean it isn`t a Sunbeam.

What do you think the make and type of the car is? Maybe anyone recognises the other 3 people in the car. Please comment below if you can help us solve this mystery.

I would bet on it being a Sunbeam as others have suggested, but I would say this is not a picture dating from his visit in 1931. The car is on beaded edge tyres so would have been completely out of date. I would suggest the picture dates from when this Sunbeam was current - 1924-5. If Campbell was there in 1931, he would have used a more recent car. Great car though!

I will let the Sunbeam experts confirm the car's identity, but it certainly looks like a Sunbeam. Malcolm Campbell is not in the back seat, but that could well be Malcolm at the wheel.

My guess is a large Sunbeam, perhaps 20/60 or 24/70. Certainly an impressive tourer

My tip would be 1924 Sunbeam 24/70,
Sorry can´t help with the people in the car.
