A PreWarCar in Köln on 21 July 1923
The picture we see was taken on 21 July 1923. It was sent in by Urs, who told us that the man behind the wheel (and owner of the car) is the great-grandfather of his wife. His name is Paul Hansing. About the location, he was able to tell us that the picture must have been taken somewhere in Köln, Germany. He would like to know more about this PreWarCar, which he thinks is “probably a Benz from 1920 or a little earlier”.
Dear knowledgeable readers, can anyone tell Urs what car this is and maybe even if it is still around (going by the picture and the little information we have).

It´s a Puch 14/38 PS " Alpenwagen "Typ VII, year 1922

No, certainly not, since the four louvres of the Puch "Alpenwagen" were positioned much closer to each other. As Ariejan has already suggested, the car in the photo most probably is a German Phaenomen 10/30 hp model which featured exactly these louvres and a pointed radiator mask.

It seems to be a 10/30 PS Phänomen of the 1920-1924 period.

Indeed, Phänomen built a similar car in the early 1920 - the 10/30 hp model. But the gas lights are an indication that it's rather the predecessor which was available before and during WW1. The v-shaped radiator appears in an advertisement from 1917 and possibly had been introduced earlier, already.

With only 4 vents in the engine bonnet,I would say that it is a Puch Typ VIII " Alpenwagen " from 1913 to 1923

Since this car still features carbide lamps, it is safe to assume, that it was made before or during WW1 - even if the photo might have been taken a little later. Several manufacturers from the German-speaking world used Benz-like radiators until the early 1920s (they were even offered as aftermarket accessory), so it's a possibility that this car wasn't manufactured by Benz (the typical badge on the front of the radiator is also missing). In my opinion, it could have been a Simson made in Suhl (Thuringia), for example, but I must admit that I haven't seen louvres like this on any German car of that era.
