A Question of Balance (see Read More for UPDATES)

A rather technical question is put to us by Rick Carey: “In pre-war days, i.e. Edwardian and Veteran, designers like Henry Royce and Louis Mooers (chief engineer at Peerless) used something called "platform suspension" at the rear axle. A longitudinal leaf spring at each side was attached to the frame in the front through a fixed mounting (i.e. no shackle). The axle was attached to the longitudinal springs in the middle or, in the case of Rolls-Royce, closer to the rear of the spring. The rear of the spring wasn't shackled to the frame but rather to a transverse leaf spring which was anchored to the centre of the frame (click for larger picture). A shackle system provided for the changes in effective length of the springs as they moved. My question is, why go to this extra work?”
