Last Thursday, before the start of the Spyker board-meeting, chairman Victor Muller unvealed a painting of the 1922 Spyker record-car. The painting was made by Dutch artist Araun Gordijn whose work we have featured before on PreWarCar. With this Spyker C4 the Australian racing driver S.F. Edge set a 24-hour record in July 1922 at Brooklands. Edge wanted to show that he could improve his own record from 1907, but not with a specially prepared racing car, but with a stand production car, which this Spyker in fact was. Edge drove a total of 2.867,2 kilometers in two times twelve hours -The Double Twelve- with an average speed of 119,5 km/u. But did you know that Edge did more than racing? Check here!
Accessories such as speedos, Lamps, horns, etc. Most of which he had relabelled under his own name and ocasionally Napier.
Also he had a line of Edge's Oils and Greases.
These were the recommended lubricants (sometimes "Use Only") in the Napier handbooks that were sold to the purchasers of a Napier at a cost of 2/6 (2 shillings and 6 pence)! Under "S. F. Edge Ltd. London. W." title on the cover of course.
The 1910 handbook devotes a whole page to these with prices. Edge's Pure Oil at 4/6 a gallon or only 3/3 per gal. if you purchased a 40 gallon barrel. Edge's Clutch Oil at 3/0 a half gallon. Edge's Motor Grease at 1/3 for a 2 pound tin. Exepensive stuff indeed!
Interestingly in the 1907 handbook the recommended oils & greases were Napier branded,eg. "Napier Engine Oil A", so Edge must have negotiated with Napier's to have his brand only.
Of course the inevetitable happened and the falling out with Montague Napier happened around 1912.
Oh to find a couple of these oil tins today on eBay!!!
