A successful move to Soestdijk

Often when a Concours d'Elegance moves to a different location, one has to see if it is an improvement. Since many years, Concours d'Elegance Het Loo in The Netherlands was well known and was hosted at Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn.

This year, there was a partial new organization and they moved to the more central Palace Soestdijk and after being present the whole weekend, we are happy with this move. We had a fantastic weekend with many stunning automobiles in a beautiful park-like surrounding. You walk over fields with new surprises after every tree. Especially as it was quite warm, the shadow of the trees was more than welcome.

The quality of the cars was very high. Earlier we have already seen that a lot of Dutch collections have to be taken seriously. And this year again, a stunning collection of cars was shown. The Best of Show award went to a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A. In the London to Brighton class a 1904 Societe Manufacture D' Armes Landaulette was awarded the first price. Also, the Junior Jury chose the Societe as the winner. The Jury price went to a 1932 Bentley 4.0 litre Vandenplas, and the Italian special coachwork pre-war class was won by a 1932 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gt Berlinetta Aerodinamica MM.

As you can read, we are a fan of the move. We believe the event has the potential to grow to one of the best in Europe. But there are still some negative notes to the event. We heard a lot of complaints about the lack of parking for visitors who arrived late and the classic car parking was only for 350 cars. Another bit of disappointment was the 'Sprint'. In the years before it was driving as fast as you can for 400m but this year it was a test of skill. It was a bit 'soft' and although it was nice it didn't have the excitement from the sprint at Het Loo.

We heard that both will be solved next year, and hopefully, there will be a longer track for the sprint cars. If they manage to improve this, we can highly recommend the event to everybody.

I noticed also some complaints about the "Royal Mile" you had to walk from the regular visitors parking lot to the official entrance. I suppose, this could be easily solved by moving the entrance to the other side of the park.
