A Timeless Passion: From the Abarths of France to the Hispano-Suizas of Bohemia

Letter to the editor

It continues to amaze me: what is it about cars that captivates us so much? Why are we all, who visit this website, seemingly consumed by this fascination? And why do we do nothing about it, even though we know how addictive this passion can be?

During the last Via Gallica, we visited a château in France with an impressive array of collections, the most notable being a remarkable assortment of Abarths, some of which were truly extraordinary. But the displays didn’t stop there—hundreds of motorcycles, dozens of fighter jets from all over the world, tractors, fire engines, and thousands of model aeroplanes were also on show (see our previous article about Wings, Wheels, and Wine: The Extraordinary Secrets of Château Savigny).

For the upcoming Via Bohemia pre-war rally, we will have the pleasure of meeting another enthusiast whose passion has spiralled beyond measure. Petr—let’s just use his Christian name—has a deep love for Hispano-Suizas and other rare pre-war automobiles. Unlike our French château owner, Petr shares his passion with fellow enthusiasts to preserve and safeguard these historic beauties and technical marvels; creations of our grandfathers that laid the foundations for the golden age of the motor car. His cars are in immaculate condition, often restored in-house, and Petr and his friends have become so skilled that his work now extends to manufacturing parts for other collectors, including Hispano and Bugatti owners.

It’s an honour for us to be among the first guests to visit and admire this exceptional collection, and we look forward to a warm welcome from our Bohemian friends.

It’s wonderful to share this common passion. That’s also what makes rallies organised by Via Flaminia so distinctive—an unforgettable atmosphere, delicious food, and overnight stays in unique locations. Bohemia certainly has plenty of those.

Under the reign of Charles IV. in the 14th century, Bohemia became the cultural and political heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Prague, the capital, was transformed into a major European centre, and the Kingdom of Bohemia flourished both economically and artistically.

During this period of prosperity, Bohemia’s wealth and strategic importance led to the construction of many castles and grand estates across the region. These fortresses, built to showcase power and secure influence, stand today as magnificent reminders of Bohemia’s historic prominence in Europe.

Registrations for pre-war car drivers are welcome—join us! Take a look here.
