A Twin or Triple Pipe Bathtub Mystery?
Throwback Thursday! This Twin or Triple Pipe Bathtub Mystery we published back in 2016. A few of our readers made a suggestion as to what this German designed PreWarCar can possibly be (you will find previous comments below). One of them directed us to this Protos type C. Someone else thinks it is a Steyr or a Mercedes-Knight. Can anyone confirm what car this is?
Bathtub Mystery
Humphrey Smith is asking: "Mystery machine with my grandfather seated in the front passenger seat. Any ideas anyone?"
We see a typical German design. Stretching from the V-shaped radiator to the nicely curved bathtub body end. The exhaust plumbing protruding from under the bonnet (two or three pipes?) plus the sheer size of the machine suggests that we're looking at a high-quality offering, built around 1920. First question: how many cylinders? Our guess is that we see an extra-large four-cylinder. A 1918/19 Benz 70 HP perhaps?

I think Hubertus is right. The car is definitely a big car with an big engine, which rules out Protos. I tried to research Joswin and what I have on photos I think he is right.

I'd rule out a Daimler "Mercedes", since the three-pointed star isn't visible (should be on either side of the radiator). As regards Steyr from Austria, their v-shaped radiators looked differently (for reference see my Steyr photo gallery: https://vorkriegs-klassiker-rundschau.blog/fotos-sonstiger-marken/steyr/). The same holds true for Steiger and Protos. I'd also advocate that this a large Benz like the one in in the attached wartime advertisement (from my collection). Note: "bathtub tails" were a rather common feature with many German cars made until the early 1920s - they don't provide any information on the manufacturer or model.

Does the box under the rear door indicate chain drive ? If so, probably a pre WW1 design ?

This is a Dürkopp double-phaeton P 24, 24/70 hp, six-cylinder from 1920.
The P 24 six-cylinder had a two block engine, that's why it had two exhaust pipes.
It had a power output of 72 horsepower, 2,000 rpm. Cylinder capacity 6246 cc
wheelbase 3715 mm, track 1400 mm .

I would agree with the big Benz, but what about an early Joswin? That was the first I thought, when I saw the Photo.

I am quite sure that it is a big Benz from around 1914/1915 or 1920/21. Its definitely no Steyr from the mid twentys and also no Steiger. This sort of body is so tipical for the time just before and after the Kaiser war. As the bodys for such cars where made by independent body firms, you could see similar bodys on many different chassis. Its absolutely not possible to see a 1921 Mercedes Benz Knight Tourer, as Mercedes Benz where founded in 1926.

I am pretty sure this is a late prewar or early postwar Benz 28/70 hp. It had a six-cylinder engine which would explain the length of the bonnet. A third exhaust pipe might be hidden behind the front wing...

Maybe 1924-1928 Steyr Type VI or VII. Bonnet vents are similar. Of the type VI, 60 were produced with 145 HP Compressor Engines

This has more resemblance to a 1921 Mercedes-Benz Knight 16 45ps Tourer, from the Bathtub tail. The rear mudguards are slightly different, not cycle type, but flat at the top, in my pictures.
