For many enthusiasts in Britain, a bracing morning drive to a gathering of vintage vehicles has become as much of a New Year's Day tradition as fireworks and Auld Lang Syne. One of the largest such gatherings is Vintage Stony, held in the characterful Buckinghamshire market town of Stony Stratford. An annual fixture now for more than 10 years, the 2024 event saw more than 80 pre-war cars convene on the historic market square, along with dozens of motorcycles and a couple of commercial vehicles.
It has been remarked upon that many classic car shows these days are sadly lacking in veteran, Edwardian and even vintage cars, so we're very grateful for dedicated events such as this, and the teeming crowds of locals who turned up just go to show that the public at large still looks very fondly upon these cars, and our efforts to preserve them are not going unappreciated. As it was, there were no fewer than three veterans present—an 1897 Léon Bollée, a 1902 Oldsmobile Curved Dash and a 1902 Gladiator tonneau—plus several Edwardians.
The popularity of Vintage Stony suggests there could be an appetite for similar events elsewhere in the country, so perhaps we might see some more springing up in the years to come. Until then, take a look at the photographs to get a flavour of the event.
