Last week’s quiz, was just as we thought a lot more doable. Most of you gave the correct answer and provided us with even more information about the car. But one of you gave some very funny comments, although these were not about the car. Politi said “why don't you ask Gerd?” and “I'm sure Gerd knows...” He is right, there is no doubt Gerd Klioba (the winner of the last six-month competition) is very very knowledgeable about pre-war cars. And also this week he gave the correct answer, but is he also the winner? Or was there someone else who has beaten him?
The make of the car can be found in the background in the shop windows. Grofri, which is also the solution to the quiz. To be even more precise, the car in the photograph is a 1927 Grofri. “A 4/20 PS Type A Super Sports Compressor” as Fedor said. These Grofri cars were manufactured from 1921 to 1931 (from 1924 to 1927 under the license of the French Amilcar).
Erler Thomas could tell us more about the Austrian company that build them, “from Gross and Friedmann. The company resided in Atzgersdorf near Vienna and was named Grofri Werke AG. They also build farming equipment.”
Fried Stol commented “their first model in 1922 was a 6 cyl car, which was successful in local races. From 1925 onwards small sporty 2 seaters, made. These affordable sports-cars qualified in numerous Hillclimbs and some equipped with a Compressor, special cylinder-head and brakes on all 4 wheels could reach a top of 85 miles. Even three- and four-seat models were built, but looked nowhere near the lean and sleek 2 seater models. Production ended in 1927”.
But Fritz Hegemann could even tell us more about the photograph “we see the visit of the German ex-Crown Prince Wilhelm in September 1927 in Vienna. After a test drive, he bought such a 4/20PS-Grofri in silver-grey."
Various good answers, all deserve 3 points. But there was one answer, in particular, we found most complete. The answer we think deserves the full 5 points, is the one from Fritz Hegemann. Congratulations Fritz!
