About What is it? Quiz #485: 1923 Bignan

We knew we had a good one, when we received this photo from our friend Hans van Ingen Schenau.. Although it is a very distinctive body style, it is not the car you would think it is. Our first guess was, just like Piet Gerinaert, Rumpler or Chenard Walcker, but Jaap ter Linden and Horacio Tomas Garcia thought. No and No, it is not. This most interesting vehicle is a 1923 Bignan.

Paul Forostovsky Jr

Gerd Klioba was the first to give us, as always, the correct answer: 'This is a 1924 Bignan 11 HP with bodywork created by Paul Forostovsky Jr. He had a patent for this kind of automobile body applied in the USA in 1922, the patent #1556778 was granted in October 1925. The main claim was to build a low and sleek body without losing headroom or legroom for the passengers. That was accomplished by placing floor members several inches below the longitudinal beams supporting the body. Forostovsky was a Russian citizen residing in Baltimore, NY.' He gave us a very interesting source of the US Patent (click here).

Neil Beadle told us this body is a one off aluminium one and the engine is a 2 liter which increased the speed from 56 mph to 71 mph. He also said 'A well travelled man, he was a patent holder for Coachbuilders 'Carrosserie Gaston Grümmer' in France, spending time in Norway, and also the USA'. Unfortunately, we cannot find this in your sources Neil.

Thank you all for participating and it made us learn a bit more about this very interesting body. Unfortunately the car seems to be gone but perhaps someone will be making a reconstruction of it!
