The only RHD Adler Trumpf?

Bryan Jonathan sends these nice period (and new) photos of the Adler his father once owned. The main picture is showing his brother, in the second photo you can see Bryan's father. He owned the car in the late 1940's after he bought it from a WW2 Spitfire or Hurricane pilot. The later pictures show the very same car but now restored and residing in Slovakia. The car spent most of its 'English life' in the Midlands and Yorkshire according to the records he has from the present owner. Bryan: "He has asked me to research the history of the car and I welcome any input if you know anything about this car? I understand this maybe the only RHD model that survived?"

UPDATE: possibly the car above is the same one as the RHD Trumph car sold a few years ago to Germany by Juri Castricum

Photo here shows Joe Ward (a 1940s star player with Shamrock Rovers) and bride-to-be Margery Coote - with Joe's Adler Trumpf, showing a mid-'30s Dublin reg plate. This RHD Adler may have been one of the CKD-built cars produced by Charlie Manders' company in Upr Mayor Street, Dublin, and has the earlier wheels and front fenders.

Photo of Fay Taylour at the 1934 Skerries Leinster Trophy has been located. Due to a newspaper strike at the time none of the Irish newspapers covered the event, and coverage in the English magazine press, while comprehensive, was very short on photos and did not include a photo of the actual winner Fay Taylour.
Thanks to the assistance of renown motorsports author Harry Havelin, and veteran car enthusiast and historian Brendan McCoy, a photo has been found in the Evening Herald newspaper published on the week of the 1935 Leinster Trophy, the first event held at the Tallaght circuit.
The car that Taylour drove in Skerries in 1934 to victory was actually the same car that RBS "Paddy Le Fanu drove to victory at the inaugural Bray "Round the Houses" race held on the 19th of May that year, (three months before the Leinster Trophy). However, the engine was changed between the two races, with the 1994cc engine in Le Fanu's car changed out for a smaller 1645cc unit at Skerries.
Photos of Le Fanu's win at Bray exist, and even though the Skerries photo only shows the cockpit of Taylour, it was possible to compare the two to confirm that they were in fact one and the same car.
Taylour was also entered in the 1935 Leinster Trophy along with three other Adlers as part of the "Irischer Adler Rennstall" - Irish Adler Racing Stable, however, due to the non-arrival of Taylour's car from Germany, she was a pre-race midweek scratch.

The Adler Trumpf Junior Sport sold by Juri Castricum, was many years in the possesion of Hartog Ford Museum. When I found this out in 2002, Mr. Hartog told me he was not interested in the car at all, but bought as part of a package deal and had forgotten it more or less. So he didn't know anything about the history of the car. Shortly after it came for sale and I inspected it once. Type 1G, which means year of construction 1934 or 1935. Front fenders and headlights non original. Licence plate points to 1966 as year of registration in NL. To my surprise there was a nameplate under the bonnet of a coachbuilder in Hoogeveen! Speedo in KMh. So it is very unlikely the car spent a part of its life in England.

In Ireland there was a very active Adler scene and participation in important motorsport events, mainly with Adler Trumf Sport (the bigger one with 1700 cc instead of 1000cc). There even was built a succesful monoposto on Trumpf Junior base. Car still exists.

RHD Adler cars were also sold in South Africa.

Brian, a contemporary report of the Leinster Handicap Trophy said Fay Taylour was driving the Adler previously driven by R.B.S. Le Fanu in the Bray, County Wicklow round-the houses race held in May 1934, although then it was 1994c.c. not 1648c.c as were all three Adlers at Leinster. If that’s correct, the photo shows what would become her car as it was rounding the town square monument in the Bray race but if not, likely much as hers would have been.

Le Fanu was also in the Leinster race in a second Robert Briscoe entered 1648c.c Adler and he came eighth. A third 1648c.c “New Sports Adler” was driven by C.H.W. Manders who was eleventh.

Hi Grimmo,
Thanks for the comment. In discussions with other Irish racing historians, I can confirm that the car driven by Paddy LeFanu in Bray in 1934 was the same car Fay Taylour won the Leinster Trophy at Skerries that August. The car has been "stripped" for weight savings, with no lights, fenders etc. Any idea if this car still survives?
I've never seen a photo of Taylour at Skerries in the Adler either. If anyone has one please send to
LeinsterTrophy.at.gmail.com

Does anyone have a photo of a 10HP Adler Trumpf Jnr FWD similar to the car that Ms. Fay Taylour drove to victory in the 1934 Leinster Trophy held at Skerries in Ireland (north of Dublin)?

This was a RWD car (I believe) that was built as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kit in Dublin after being brought in from Germany crated. This car was purchased by the then Lord Mayor of Dublin Robert Briscoe who was an investor in the Adler car company in Dublin at the time.

A friend of mine found a right handed Adler Trumpf Junior Sport in a forest near the border to France a couple of years ago. It was left there at wartimes when no fuel was was in the tank anymore. It was hidden under a large bush of bramble fruits. It is now in the state of restoration. Wish i had crawled thorugh the forest....

Hi Joris,

I have a feeling that this is an Adler Trumpf Junior,Trumpf were larger. As Amal said, there is an example in India. BTW, Adler had very good sales in India in the pre-war years, they had an agent in Bombay, sold cars all over India through sub-dealers. All the cars sold in India were RHD. I myself have 4 Adlers, one Trumpf and three Juniors, all in different body styles and RHD. There survive around 20 to 25 such Adlers in India, sedan, tourer and cabriolet. At present only one sports car as shown is known here.
I think this car pictured was shown in barnfinds.com sometime ago.
I am quite sure this is a Junior but won't bet on it.
Cheers

There is an identical RHD Adler in Mumbai (Bombay ) , India.

Owned by Mr. Samir Kadam. It has been displayed at various events in India.

One can google Samir Kadam Adler - and the car shows up.
