By Leigh Dorrington: Admiral Richard Byrd was called up by President Roosevelt himself in the days immediately before WWII, and ordered to Antarctica to survey and claim the area in a real life “race with Nazi scientists.” Admiral Byrd’s Snow Cruiser was a mobile laboratory and barracks built in 1939 to support four men for up to a year in Antarctica. The 55-foot behemoth was powered by two 150 hp six-cylinder diesel engines driving electric generators that powered 75 hp General Electric motors mounted in the hub of each wheel—a gasoline-electric hybrid. Each tire was 10-feet tall and an airplane rode on top of the Cruiser. Here, the completed vehicle pitched into a ditch in October 1939, near Delphos Ohio, where it drew crowds for several days, before being loaded onto Byrd's ship bound for Antarctica.
