An Egyptian car mystery

Dear very knowledgeable PreWarCar.com friends,

When you click on the second photo, you will see the full picture of this week’s mystery car.

Mahmoud Ezzeldin, one of our magazine readers, came across this photo at the Manial Palace Museum Collection. The museum is a former Alawiyya dynasty palace and located on the Nile in Caïro, Egypt. We see Prince Mohammed Ali Tewfik on the left-hand side with the tiller steering. The other man is unknown to us. If anyone can tell us who he is, we would be pleasantly surprised. More likely you might be able to tell us more about the vehicle we see in the picture.

Please comment below if you can help us solve this Egyptian car mystery.

I wonder if it is an early electric car. The mechanical bits underneath look too inaccessible to be an ic engine, and lack the usual huge flywheel. All those wires or cables below suggest electric. Most steamers of the time had the engine placed vertically below the seat and there is no visible flue. It looks very small but the wheels for example are very substantial so perhaps it carried heavy batteries.
