Are we seeing double?

It's the nosepiece of one of the many strange vehicles that was found among the Lee Hartung Collection. It’s a 1936 Lincoln Zephyr equipped with the “Twin Grille” optional extra. Inventor Willard Morrison was of the opinion that 1930s (American) automobiles would be more attractive if they had a wider look, so he came up with the “Dual Nose” conversion, a smaller replica of the car’s own grille. These grilles were available for Packards, Fords and this Lincoln Zephyr. A true collector’s item if we’ve ever seen one. They certainly made the cars seem wider, though they had the side effect of convincing passers-by that they were seeing double.

There was a similar "nose job" available for the Traction, or should that have been an "Unattraction" as it made it look like an FX3 taxi, you see them regularly on leboncoin. Lets not forget, before we sling too much mud, those awful GRP false noses for Midgets and Spitfires too, quite dreadful. I expect someone will re-invent it again soon, although in these Nanny State days I'm sure there will be something to stop you doing it.

It reminds me more of Madonna as dressed by Jean Paul Gaultier some years back ...

No Carrick, don't be naughty. This is simply a fine example of American 'taste'. If one is good two is better and so on ad infinitum. Don't forget that this is the country that gave us the 1959 Cadillac, one of the few cars that regularly used to kill people when it was standing still...

This car reminded me of the Siam, a remarkable Dutch creation based on the Ford AA. See: http://www.ncad.nl/nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=108:siam&catid=7:weetjes&Itemid=37
