What to offer for a barnfound 1934 Fiat Ballila 508M (upd. Military !)

Chuck Dyarmett writes: "I recently acquired (had been in storage for a long time) this vehicle thinking I might restore it, however, found and started a BJ8 Healey instead.  I am wanting to sell this car, but have no idea what it may be worth.  It is rusty but complete ( exception of the rear bumper).  I would welcome any ideas relative to value. "

editor: well Chuck, it is a friendly little project.  Yet you may have overlooked one important element in the marketing mix of Project, Price, Location. The very same car may be worth a lot more let's say in Torino, Italy where it was made than for instance in Tampa, Florida. We will ask our readers what they think of it but we guess most of them will keep their powder dry. Better post the car with a free trial advert and ask slightly too much ( $ 12,000 ? maybe), while adding the wording that you are open  too sensible offers.

I think a 'touch of realism' is needed here. A very attractive Fiat 501 tourer from 1922, in excellant condition, is being offered on this site for £12,000, so after restoration I cannot see this Ballila fetching more than £8- 10,000. The problem appears to be that the body is rusted through in places, requiring new metal, so a substantial part of the cars' restored value could be spent on the coachwork, quite apart from the inevitable mechanical work required. Since all this will be unaffordable for most, it really requires someone with the skill snd enthusiasm to do much of the work himself: there are indeed such people, but few of them will be prepared to pay very much for the initial purchase.

Looks like a fun project- all U-Haul trailers have that backwards sticker to be seen in your rear-view mirror.

thing is... first of all you have to find someone who is dead keen on these little cars,,,, then if you want top dollar he has got to be wealthy... as they had a production run of over 100 thousand 508s they are not rare.. even if 1 percent survived there are still about 1000 floating about. i would have thought that 12k would get you a great running example.... dont forget you would have to be quite well off to drop 12k on a play thing that even if you did the work yourself it might take anything from 1 to 25 years to complete! seems to me willem knows the score

As I think you know the car is a peculiar spider: the "M" is for "Militare". It was the car for the MP (carabinieri)that followed the army in his movments expecially in the colonyes. The car had peculiars colours also. To thik to the value you must know the price of a restored car (between 30.000 and 40.000 Euro) and subtract tho cost of restorazion. The body seems correct except the cap of the boot. Is the tacheometer in Km or miles? Maurizio

Stuart, the '55' is shown properly so that as you look in your side rearview mirror it reminds you of the speed limit. Probably a rental trailer, or was at one time. Cute little bugger though.

Don't sell it! Don't restore it! Make it mechanically sound and safe to drive and keep it just as it is.

I offered 3 balilla's from which one rare Kelch bodied coupe in same or even better condition for 7500 Euro.
Yes all 3 together with papers and it seems no one showed an interest to pick them up... Perhaps cost for transport is higher than value of the cars ;-)

editor: we don't think it is wise to offer three nearly identical cars at the same time

The backside of the body looks rather home-made but maybe it isn't? Value depends on if the car is still how it left the factory in Italy.

Lovely little right hand drive Ballila.
I shouldn't be surprised at that, ... until I saw the picture of it on the trailer ? ? Was this image mirrored . The sign on the trailer should read SPEED 55 LIMIT ...No ?
The front elevation of the car shows it as RHD with the Ballila Correctly written on the Radiator Grille .
Maybe I should offer 00021$ for it
Stuart

editor: maybe the 55 speed limit sticker is meant for the driver to see in his mirror...??
