Barn-fresh news from Hershey!

Yesterday marked the opening of what must be the largest old car event in the world. The annual Antique Automobile Club of America Eastern Division Fall Meet, succinctly known as "Hershey," swung wide its gates for the 65th time at its original location, once open land but now a major attraction called "Hersheypark" in that chocolate-scented Pennsylvania town.

But my has it grown from its modest beginnings, to more than 9,000 vendor spaces of automobiles, parts and automobilia, much of it for prewar cars. You can buy lamps, solid western sheet metal, horns, jacks, tire pumps, and just about anything else you might be searching for. If you're looking for a prewar car of your own consider this 1912 Buick Model 35, which looks like it is not long out of the barn.

Hershey, the town, will be around forever, but Hershey, this year’s old car meet runs only through Saturday, when there will be a 1,200-car auto show. As they say on TV, c'mon down!

I first went to Hershey in 1975 and there were rivers flowing through the vendor's fields. A lot of stuff got ruined and I was in water up to my waist at one point and had to put my wallet in my shirt pocket. What wasn't flooded was a No-Man's-Land sea of mud. Lucky I didn't catch pneumonia. I was told there were tornadoes west of town but didn't see any. I do remember a 1930? 31? Meredes 770 limousine project with a Castagna body, or so the seller told me. He removed the headlights in case someone slipped in the mud and put an elbow through one them. I wonder where that one is today? When I walk around the vendor's grounds now, it's hard to relate the mud of back then to the paved lots of today.

HERSHEY ...... Memories .......!
1987 and 1988: my trips to that chocolate-scented Pennsylvania town were high-lights in my automotive life after retiring from business. Together with my American friends I spent two times three days there + the big Saturday-show: never to forget!!
Kind regards,
