Has PreWarCar gone nuts? Choosing from all beauties that were to be admired last weekend this scruffy Austin 4 pot as best? Yes, we have gone nuts. Gone nuts when confronted with this one seater aero-dream which has verrrrrry little to do with automotive history. It's a piece of art making a deep bow to Edwardian engineering and racing. There is nothing coincidental on the purpose built 1911 aero special conceived by Oliver Way plus father and company. Every detail is there because it was meant to be there. Starting with a 1911 Austin chassis plus a 1918 10 litre Hall-Scott thunder pack (Owles Head Transport Museum) the menu was written! Now the the art department could start its doing. Referring to the aero background the Austin received a two millimeters wooden skin ending in an alloy cigar tip. The cockpit is loaded with vintage goodies and thick layers of patina. Get in and check the steering plus dashboard (clic), you can almost smell the castor oil. The overall look of this killer Austin is as if carefully maintained during many decades without ever being restored. Reality is that it is a brandnew special. Applause for Beaulieu's Best (clic)! Applause for the artists! These are the parts you hope to find at a good jumble. This kind of suprising machinery you hope to see when buying an entree ticket. This is the dream you want to dream. It is also the way to keep atracting younger enthusiasts. Dear Lord Montague, put machinery like this - or comparable - on a pedestal near the entrance next year. Or pull out a few museum dinosaurs to the middle of the jumble and let them roar once or twice a day. In other words: add some nitro to worlds best known autojumble. (photos editor)
