Bertha Benz and the unknown

The story of Bertha Benz is well-known amongst all of us. This video beautifully depicts the invention and reactions to a woman and the unknown… This weekend during Classics at the Palace, a replica of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen will be on display at the PreWarCar.com and PostWarClassic.com stand.

Enjoy watching the video and we hope to see you at Concours d'Elegance Paleis Soestdijk.

Exelente ambientacion!! lastima, que con semejante esfuerzo, sigan usando el prototipo Nª 1, cuando en realidad dicha travesia se realizó en el prototipo Nª3.-

Bertha Benz is an important figure in the automotive history, no doubt about that. What I dislike about that video are two things: Firstly, the role of her sons is ignored, since it was them who knew how to operate and drive their father's motorcar. Secondly, the sombre world that is shown in the film has little to do with rural Germany in the late 1880s. Of course, people didn't have their ploughs dragged by women, but by oxen or horses, back then. These weren't the "Dark Ages"! Also, the villages weren't full of freaks and lunatics, and houses that obviously date back to the 18th and 19th century were in much better shape. Last but not least, Bertha's historic ride took place on a Sunday in August! Why the makers of this movie so desperately try to make the environment look as gloomy and dystopic as possible, remains their secret...
