This BMW 328 is brought back into daylight near Boston, USA. Only very recently it was recovered by PreWarCar visitor and Quiz winner, Sandy Leith!
(Quiz #197):
"Here is BMW chassis no. 85081 which has just moved into my garage after a 43 year slumber in a neighboring suburb of Boston. It belonged to my late godfather, Ted Wales, who raced the car actively in the early days of the VSCCA. In 1964, a rear half-shaft broke and the car was retired to the back of his barn. I know very little of the car's history and hope, maybe, that fellow prewarcar.com readers can help. It was delivered to Auto-Fels in Munich in June of 1937 and, somewhere along the line, received the engine of the first production car, ex-85004. I would be delighted to hear from any 328 enthusiasts who have information on 85081. It is not for sale!"
Sandy Leith is looking forward to receive any information on Auto Fels in Munich, on this BMW 328 and its racing history and on Ted Wales of course. Please send your comments to

From a California BMW expert we understand that the early 328 car #85004 used to be in the US at a certain point. So the next question is, what happened to the coachwork of #85004 ?
