Two gearboxes, that’s what’s bothering Roberto Corno from Torino, Italy. He’s is restoring this Fiat 509, but his problem is that it has two gearboxes. One’s the original Fiat ‘box, but the other… a mystery! It so happens that this is a well known conversion for old-age cars that are converted to a tractor. This way you’ll get a lot of gears for little or no money. Have a good look at that second gearbox. What is it? The only clue we could find is a little mark on the side of the ‘box. Who can help Roberto? Mail us (RB)
UPDATE by Frazer Sloan: “That type of little gearbox (or something which looked like it) was optional extra to Model T Fords. It has similarities to one made by Warford I had on a Model T but I couldn't be sure. It, like on the Fiat, was designed to sit behind the original gearbox.”
