Calling Genevieve and friends! Film stars wanted for 2023 Brighton Run

Casablanca? Citizen Kane? No, we don't think so... We are of one mind here at PreWarCar.com, namely that the best film ever made is Genevieve, the light-hearted comedy about the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.

It hasn't escaped our notice that this year is a big anniversary for Genevieve, which was the second-highest-grossing film at the British box office in 1953, and won Best British Film at the British Acedemy Film Awards and Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes. More important, though, is the tremendous effect it had on generating interest in the early-vehicle preservation movement.

We and the Royal Automobile Club are both very keen that its 70th anniversary should be celebrated appropriately, and to that end we are hopeful that this year's Brighton Run should also be a Genevieve reunion, with as many of the cars that starred in the film as possible coming out from hiding to mark the occasion.

We know that some of the cars which starred alongside the eponymous 1904 Darracq 12hp and the big 1905 Spyker phæton are still enthusiastically rallied and loyally return to the run every year, but what about the rest? Many of the others are alive and well, but it's been many years since they last appeared on the Brighton. As for the rest, there are some which we've completely lost sight of.

Genevieve herself, of course, now lives in the Louwman Museum in the Netherlands, and every year she returns to London in the enthusiastic hands of Evert Louwman to make the capital-to-coast dash. Louwman also owns the Spyker, and this year both cars will be taking pride of place at the St. James's Concours in London on Saturday 4th November, before heading off to Brighton together with hundreds of other veterans the next day.

Perhaps you're the owner of an ex-Genevieve car which has been taking a rest for a few years. Why not dust it down and be a part of this 70th anniversary celebration? Maybe you know the owner of one who just needs a few gentle words of persuasion to put it back on the road?

Let's do what we can to make this a memorable year for veteran-car enthusiasts and pull out all the stops for the Genevieve reunion. The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run takes place this year on Sunday 5th November, and entries are now open.
