Charlie Chaplin's Minerva

A framed black-and-white photo of one of the cars that supposedly belonged to Charlie Chaplin has been put up for sale on eBay. It is thought to be a Minerva.

I have been in possession of a Minerva that is being restored for several years now. As a result, I am quite well-informed about this marque. However, there is no way I can characterise this car as a Minerva. The side of the bonnet with horizontal vents, the visible side exhaust, the thin side of the windscreen, the shape of the rear side window, the hood and the exceptionally low rear of the rear mudguard do not suggest to me that it is a Minerva coachwork or coachbuilder.

Can the readers of PreWarCar.com help me?

This is a tough one. It made me think of the 1919 Fatty Arbuckle Pierce Arrow; maybe it's not what it seems. It has Westinghouse Air Springs, which suggests a "high end" car. I feel the exhaust could be a fake and just for appearance. The poor old spare spare would melt being in such close proximity. There's also no discolouration of the exhaust pipe either. I reckon it could be either a circa 1920 HCS or Haynes modified in the style of the "Fatty Arbuckle", including a Delage style radiator and bonnet profile...

I saw this photo a long time ago, and at first glance I had my doubts about it. I later discovered that it is a Locomobile, or at least that is what the source claimed. It was a long time ago, but I don't think it is a Minerva at all. I have a collection of hundreds of Minerva photos and there is no resemblance.

It is not a 1926-27 Stutz, as it has no front brakes. It could well be a Minerva judging from the radiator shape. If Minerva, I would opt for the 20CV four-cylinder model, as the 30CV six was much longer with a longer bonnet; it's of 1924 at the latest as there are no front brakes. The bodywork is certainly American.

It looks like a 1926-1927 Stutz AA with special bodywork.

There is nothing there that says the car could be a Minerva. It looks American to me.
