Chicken Wings on Wheels (UPDATE II : horsedrawn cart)

An acquaintance of Christopher Fish recently showed him a pair of wheels on an axle that he was proposing to weigh in for scrap. Chris persuaded him to hang on to the wheels, in order to find out more about them. On a hunch we showed the pictures to Austin Seven expert Bas de Voogd, who identified them as very early Austin Seven, only mounted upside-down on the axle. The centers are closed instead of open. We couldn’t spot it on the pictures, but on the middle of the hub the word "Austin" should be visible. It could be that someone used the axle and wheels to create some sort of trailer. Perhaps to haul a load of chickens? Anyway, we would certainly not throw the wheels away, maybe there’s someone, somewhere desperately searching for these wheels? (RB)

UPDATE II by Tony Prebensen:"The springs look very much like horsedrawn cart springs that have had an upgrade by an enterprising farmer."
UPDATE I by John Hearne: “It could well be that whilst the axle and wheels have come from an A7 the half elliptic springs and spring hangers have come from an earlier machine. The spring hangers in particular are extremely well made and the springs themselves look to be rounded and tapered which is a sign of a quality spring.”
