Daimler Lancefield without memory. ( upd.Double Six ? )

Derek Molloy from Ireland is investgating this imposing Limousine by Lancefield. Although the car is currently licensed for Ireland the orginal registration was DLY258 . Derek only knows that this registration must have been delivered in the period December '36 to January '37. Of course he would love to find out who the earlier owner or owners were; the DVLA can not help.  At last somebody who like to save a closed car! We need to give him some support.

Hi I have a set of photos of this car from Lancefield. It's in a brown cover folder.

Please email me as I would love to know more about the car as Lancefield has family connections.

Thanks Lucie

This car doesn't have any Royal connections at all! This is the "Invalid Limousine" by Lancefield, exbihit at 1936 Olympia Motor Show. One of the very last Double Six, and one of 9 Poppet Valve engine.

The car itself states{on chassies plate} its a 50 hp and the straight 8 was only a 32 hp engine this car also boasts two thermostats one for each side of the v it also has the wider radiator the v12 had fitted to them.

My comments below notwithstanding, I have now found this car in the coachwork section of the 1936 'Autocar' motorshow edition (under Lancefield) and it is indeed referred to as a double- six! It was probably an older double- six chassis rebodied. Even the 12ft 10in straight 8 chassis would have been modest for this monster. If Mr Molloy knows the eact wheelbase I can probably identify the chassis- type. It would be interesting to know if the car had the 1935 'poppet valve' V12 engine- It is believed plans were originally made to build nine such engines. In the magazine the car is shown with a large rear overhang, and the bed 'swivelled'- presumably to deposit its invalid through the huge side doors. The 'award' must have been for wormanship- certainly not beauty!

It is extremely unlikley this car was ever a double six- or had Royal connections. The last double 6's were two 'poppet valve' limousines built for the King and Queen in 1935, plus one 'non - Royal' car. The king had made use of ambulances some years earlier, but none were ordered in 1935 when he was actually in reasonably good health anyway. The straight 8 was well established by 1935. This car is certainly 1936- 7 style and presence or absence of bonnet outlets' merely indicate possible use in a warm climate. The central strip in the radiator was common to all Daimlers by 1936.

Yes it is as keith suggests and totally complete it now has a straight eight fitted the chassie is a opr 3-50 hp and the car measures a lenght of 20 feet and a weight of 3 1/2 tonne quite heavy for a alum bodied car.The car it self won a prize for its coachwork at the 1936 olympia motor show and is truly amazing coachwork of walnut interior, silk blinds, and what can only be described as a armcahir in the rear with a beautiful occasional seat that folds behind the drivers compartment. It also has foot pegs built into the door pillars for access to its roof rack and a luggage carrier thats folds out to the rear of the car i will post more pictures later.

I have seen this car with Derek and it is rumoured that it has Royal Copnnections. It was, as Ed says a Double Six as it has two outlets either side of the radiator, only one side is used at the moment as it is fitted at present with a straight eight. Even though there is a doors and handles fitted on the right hand side both are dummy doors. The rear is the most interesting as it is fitted more like an ambulance than a limousine, an upmarket one at that. It is fitted out in walnut, with a stretcher to the offside, and a washbasin that tilts to empty on the nearside. An electric inmtercom is fitted to communicate with the driver and silk blinds are fitted to the rear windows. It is still complete with bedpans. The picture does not do justice to the scale of the car, it is enormous, from memory are unsubstaniated, but it was mentioned by a previous owner that it was built for George V as an Ambulance to carry him around when he was in poor health late on in his reign. I'm sure that Derek will post some more photos later.
