'Desafio de los Clasicos'
(70 km north of Buenos Aires)

Fernando Godoy from Argentina wrote to us about the “Desafio de los Clasicos” (Classics Challenge) that took place in the small country town Capilla del Señor, about 70 km north of Buenos Aires. During the cloudy and very cold day, two main events were held: a driving skills contest and a side to side race of two similar cars. The latter was won by Pablo Benavente with a 1929 Ford “A” Baquet. The word “baquet” has a French origin, but it is somewhat uncertain about how it is used. It defines open and hand made racing cars from early 1900 up to 1940. Both Juan Fangio and Froilan Gonzalez started their careers running this contraptions, hand made by them, in the open dirt roads in the happier ages of racing cars, before they went on to become Formula I champions.
