"Desert Queen" - Alfa 6C 1750

Letter to the editor

One of the few benefits of coronavirus lockdown is being able to spend time working on our restoration projects. I attach photographs of my 6C Alfa Romeo 1750 which is now nearing completion. The original car had an interesting history. It`s a 6th series Grand Sport which was first registered in July 1933. It found, briefly, a new owner in 1937, and in 1938 was exported by a new owner to Asmara in Eritrea which, at that time, was an Italian colony. It was crashed in racing and dissembled and, following British occupation after WW2 its remnants were eventually returned to England. After lengthy storage, and earlier, stalled attempts at restoration, I acquired the remnants some 4 years ago as my "retirement" project. While the car is no longer wholly original, I have obtained a majority of missing original parts, sourced from owners around the world, and my project is nearly complete. With any luck, the car should be running later this summer.

I have details of the car`s ownership following it`s journey to England, but I`m keen to find out more of its Italian history. If any readers can advise me how such information can be found I`d be most grateful.

Kind regards,

Richard Francis

Dear Adrian,
Thanks for your comments. In fact the colour as shown in the photos is somewhat lighter than my actual shade, which is the darker, traditional Alfa burgundy colour. Depending on your make of your car, shades of this colour can be readily obtained from any of the proprietary manufacturers (Alfa, Ford Vauxhall etc).

Do you have an old Italian registration number? With this, you could order a "Cronologico", which is a copy of the old, hand-written papers with a list of owners (in case it had any, before it went to Eritrea). If not, we could try to order a "visura telaio", which is looking for the registration plate over the chassis number, and then afterwards, get a cronologico with the registration. The second option is usually a lot less successful, since the shorter chassis numbers of vintage cars mingle with the longer numbers of modern cars, and so you get a lot of unwanted hits. But, just as the others suggested, try John de Boer. He is usually very friendly and helpful.

Dear Alfred,
Many thanks for your comments and advice. Unfortunately, I don`t have an Italian registration number for the original car, only the month of its first registration. So it would look like the "visura telaio " would be the way forward. Do you know if there any organisations that could carry out such searches for me (at a fee)?
Kind regards, Richard

Interesting project. There was and perhaps is a full gearbox 6 th series available in Italy but I presume you already have one.
What is the chassisnumber? John de Boer is indeed the right person to ask !

Dear Hugo,
Thanks for your comments. I`m pleased to say that I already have the original gearbox, being the "long", 6th series variety, with the free wheel attachment. I`ve found John de Boer`s website and will attempt to complete, and submit, his detailed form, in the hope he can provide more information about the car`s history.
Many thanks, Richard
