Early motoring in Victoria

The car is nice, but the woman is beautiful.

Now please tell us where in Victoria, BC, the photo was taken.

One and Two cylinder REO's were tested in October 1904 and displayed at the January 14 1905 New York automobile show. The second REO, a Model B one cylinder was sold and shipped to Mr Linscott in 1904(THE REO Review Oct. 1921 p11).
Phil Hill drove a 1904 Model B REO in the London to Brighton in 1966 (Phil Hill Does London to Brighton TV Guide JAN.14 1967) VCC Certificate of Dating 544. The REO was owned by Jimmy Leake.

This is a REO Model A or B Runabout, introduced end of January 1905 and made until end of 1906 in this guise. In 1907 a new design of the ”engine hood” followed. Available in 2- or - 1-cylinder form it enjoyed some fame from successfully participating in the Glidden Tour in 1905. However it was not eligible for the Brighton Run.
On a photo like this you can’t really determine if the car is a 1905 or 1906 or if it is a model A or B. You have to check the serial number plates for that (1905 up to ser. # 4000; 1906 are ser. # 4001 to 5200). Look under the seat for a model A opposed 2-cyl engine or for a model B single cyl.
I think the elegant lady shows off great confidence, probably well aware of the little car’s eminent driveability and ease of handling. Who she is? Not a clue! But probably a canadienne - the REOs were not uncommon there.

What a pity. This lovely lady would have surely delighted the folks on the LBVCR. But her bright shiny new 1906 REO 1 cylinder model B would not qualify.

It looks like a 1905/07 REO runabout.

The car is 1906 Reo 8hp runabout. This car isn't of course eligible for the London-Brighton run, but almost any Reo wouldn't be: the first Reo was ready by October 1904 and this car was thoroughly tested before the introduction on the New York Show in January 1905. Perhaps production already started end of 1904, and in that case, if you were lucky enough to own a car from that first series, you might have the opportunity to enter. But to my knowledge a Reo never was present in the run.

I don't think it's 1904 or even earlier. My guess is 1906 Single-cylinder REO Model B Runabout
