Find the sparkplugs...

So you know about cars. Then you may be capable explaining yourself why this 1904 Berliet has no sparkplugs.... For starters: it's not a Diesel! We were puzzled ourselves as well last Saturday. We were invited on board the XXL groundpounder (a 7 liter 4 cylinder 1904 Berliet) of John Tanner & Andrew Watt to enjoy a day out, part of the 49th 'Traditierit' of the Pionier Automobiel Club, Netherlands. The Berliet is full of ultramodern technology which is hard to explain through these pages. But to get an idea, you wouldn't expect to have twin transmission brakes that are balanced for left and right by a double differential. Also we were not prepared for an exhaust pressurised fuel system. But the missing sparkplugs did it. Andy explained with endless patience to whoever was asking, about the Berliet's 'igniters' (click). The underlying camshaft is not only taking care for the valve timing but also for ignition timing. In fact the cams open soem sort of large contact points inside the ignition rooms. A brilliant, efficient, rarely-failing system which makes starting and driving of the Berliet 'Monstre' a jiffy. Well, you probably do not know about many other pre 1905 cars which do not complain when averaging 5000 miles per year? And think of what you could save on sparkplugs in 100 years of maintenance...
Once more many, many thanks to 'Fatspark Team' Andy & John - and of course to the organisers of PAC - for a wonderfull day of early motoring! Be sure to check the Tips & Tricks of MagnetoRepairs.com.
