First female chauffeur and her Femina

Meet Miss M.B. Houffelaar, today’s Friday Lady. She surely must have been a woman who wanted to stand her ground in the typically male profession of being a chauffeur.

The photograph dates to 1917 and this is what the original caption mentions: “Yet another new task for a lady in The Netherlands! Miss M.B. Houffelaar, the first female chauffeur, who worked as such before the War in Antwerp, completed her skill test successfully for the police in Amsterdam. Together with her own pretty ‘Femina’ car she now has her own place at the stock exchange on the Damrak.”

We wonder if the name Femina was one she gave to the mighty motorcar herself as we don’t think an official marque with such a name ever existed. But then you lot will identify this car instantly, won’t you?

I checked the license plate, and it was indeed issued on December 15, 1906, to Mrs. Martha Bardina Houffelaar from Amsterdam.

Lars Legaards sugestion Scania-Vabis isn't totalt wrong as the Swedish car was based on Der Dessauer.

I agree with Ariejan - the car is a Dessauer, probably one from c.1910/11. Attached is an original advertisement from c.1912 (from my collection) showing the distinctive radiator which is identical to the one fitted to Miss Houffelaar's taxi.

The make of this taxi had been subject to discussion for a long time in the past, but nowadays there seems to be a general consensus that the car is a Dessauer (also called Der Dessauer). The general agent was J.H. Feldberg & Zoon (= Son) in Amsterdam. A local agent was Obe Yntema in Workum (province of Friesland), who happened to be also a coachbuilder. He built a very similar landaulette on a Dessauer chassis (uploaded).
