The car in this picture is a Wanderer W52, a splendid luxury model with a six-cylinder, 62bhp engine. It would not have been an unworthy rival to the BMW 320, but only 834 were ever built so it was a rare sight even when new.
It was a luxurious, powerful and exclusive car, so the opportunity to go for a brisk drive in one with the roof down on a bright, sunny day ought to put a smile on anyone’s face. The young Fraulein about to step inside doesn’t look too happy, though. Why ever not?
It would have been unusual for a woman to own such an expensive car in the 1930s, so we suppose it probably isn’t hers. It most likely belongs to her father, husband or boyfriend, who had to leave it behind when they left for work in the morning. Young Margarete was very much looking forward to taking it for a spin while he wasn’t looking. She’d go for a relaxed saunter along the country roads, meet a friend for lunch and return the Wanderer just as he left it, and he’d be none the wiser. Alas, the expression on her face suggests he came home early…
