Made in the homeland of Santa.

It is not the first location where to expect a fabulous car collection. Still it is there at the Fountainhead Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska. Of course you can visit the website, but now there's also a book showcasing the collection that was initiated by founder Tim Cerry. The book covers the Veteran Era, the Brass, Nickel, Classic era and the Midget Racers. It is amazing to find hightlights of the american automobile manufacturers. Starting with the 1898 four cylinder Hay Motor Vehicle, and then Cadillac, Cord, Heine-Velox,  Owen Magnetic, Stutz, Wills Sainte Claire and many more. All this under one roof, but also in one pretty book. But maybe most remarkable is the 1905 Sheldon featured here. It is the very first car of Alaska, made in Alaska by Robert Sheldon  who wanted to impress a young lady.  The car's first official appearance was in the 1905 Skagway Fourth of July Parade. It may have been a small event on the scale of automotive history. But it made good old Santa scratch the back of his head looking at his own sled...

You can order the Alaska's Fountain Collection (glossy softcover with 120 pages in colour) at $20 + postage from  Nancy DeWitt at the museum.
