Giggles and Gags (UPDATE: Goodwood dress code)
The next Goodwood Revival (one of the most popular historic motor race meetings, held this year from 17-19 September) promises to be even more authentic than the previous editions. To add the realistic atmosphere of the Revival more than 75 actors and actresses have become members of GAG, the Goodwood Actors Guild. They, and all Goodwood staff, will dress in appropriate period clothing from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, just like most of the spectators. All around the race track scenes from a bygone era will be acted out. Spivs selling nylons and watches from beneath their coats; airline captains, with a string of adoring air hostesses in tow and even the Dad’s Army home guard are there. If the Gags do their job, the giggles will come naturally!

It depends on where you are going and which series you would like to see. In Tokyo you can probably attend races at Circuit Mont Fuji or Twin Ring Motegi.

Oh, dear!
So a wonderful weekend's racing and socialising will be marred even more by bizarre fancy dress. You want Goodwood dress code? Try not turning up in uniform for a start. The only uniforms I remember were on St John's Ambulance people. If you must wear a uniform, try to get it right. There were no corporal pilots ever! Off duty admirals rarely went out in uniform when on leave. All servicemen, even the humblest pongoes, owned an iron and knew how to press their uniforms, I never saw a teddy boy at Goodwood and in any case their jackets were not in the strange colours we see each year and, to be fair to the yobs in the fifties,they had the jackets made by tailors so they did fit. Good God! I could bore for Britain in 2012 once I start on this.
If you really want to look like a fifties enthusiast, try grey flannels or fawn cavalry twill with a sports jacket and a tie. A cheesecutter cap like Hawthorn's will top you off nicely. Women might like to look for those odd trousers which fastened at the side and had elastic under the instep. I'd better stop; bring me my tablets and another rug, nurse.
