How to build a better Mousetrap (Upd. early Austin Seven Chummy)

Gordon England was best known for his racing bodies made for Austin Sevens. But in 1926 he also developed this simple garage that’s an ideal fit in your back garden. The idea is to park your car on a wooden plank, then drop the cover over your car (click main pic). Looks terribly easy as it’s supposed to be ‘weightless’. We wonder though, and are not quite sure it was a marketing success. Does a garage like this still survive somewhere? And the car, could it be a Bean?

Bas de Voogd came up with another picture of this garage, showing the inside with -off course-  an Austin Seven.

In those days cars deteriorated rapidly if left out every night- hoods and paint finishes had a short life, and the car probably would not start in the morning. However, the car would not last long if stowed in this little 'box', either. With no room for air to circulate any moisture would soon attack the electrics and cause widespread corrosion of metalwork. Anyway, Getting the car into the exact position required would clearly have required considerable skill and concentration- owners would soon have got fed up with the thing!

It looks like Austin Seven 1926, I like the idea to park your car on a wooden plank. Even I think it should be marketed.

All models of the Bean had two semi elliptic front springs installed longitudinally. This car appears to have a transverse single front spring installed above the front axle.

The obviously small size suggests an Austin 7, but the shape of the front axle looks wrong.

It must have had a counterweight. Still, it would have been cumbersome.

It looks pure 1926 Austin 7 to me. Lateral semi-elliptic spring at the front; nuts for the radius arms; headlamps at the scuttle, not between the mudguards; etc.

Not a Bean, but an early and well-used Austin 7; just what you'd expect from Gordon England.
