If as a classic car lover, you decided to restore a car yourself, you don`t do it just for the result.
Not for ideological reasons, such as leaving something behind for the next generation. It would be easier to plant a tree. Of course, it is nice that later on, someone may still enjoy a piece of historical heritage for which you have extended the life and perhaps even given a second life.
The pleasure in restoring a car lies particularly in the learning of skills, searching for and finding parts: the feeling of euphoria and finding solutions to problems. There is also pleasure in renewing and restoring various parts. Every time a worn or perished parts had been renovated, it is a proud and happy moment and you enjoy the result.
Restoring a classic car is a rewarding pastime and an enrichment of knowledge and skills. Any restoration has its own story with several episodes. The story of the Riley in word and pictures may be a stimulus for anyone to start such a project.
This is the preface from the book “a second life”, written by Herman Arentsen.
In the book, Herman tells us about his upbringing and the (classic) cars in his youth. His passion for English cars plays a great roll in the project; the restoration of a 1938 Riley Kestrel Big Four saloon which he started a couple of years ago and finished last year.
