Not afraid to drive long distances, Ian Murray took his Rolls Royce to see the Mille Miglia. His story: “Most entrants to the Mille Miglia have as their back-up vehicles new Mercedes or Renault vans. We used my 1924 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Unfortunately The OM which was entered broke down before we managed to leave Scotland. In trying to get it back on the road we missed our ferry crossing from Newcastle to IJmuiden and therefore missed the car train from Düsseldorf to Alessandria in the north of Italy. Undaunted, we all piled into the Silver Ghost and left Blair Atholl, Perthshire - Scotland at midnight and drove through the night to Folkestone where we caught the channel tunnel to Calais. Our first night's stop was in Arras. The second day took us over the San Goddard in Switzerland and we arrived in Italy the following morning. In total we covered 3475 miles on our tour to Italy with no real problems - apart from loosing all the electrics when one of the wires came loose from the back of the ammeter, we had no other problems. In total the Silver Ghost has covered almost 10,000 miles (16.000 km) since January this year.” Editor: Great trip, Ian, anyone else with a similar story? Tell us!
UPDATE by Rick Ford : "Your story of Ian Murray and his much travelled RR Silver Ghost tells only part of the story. It had previously ventured in even more distant foreign climes.(click for Rick Ford's photos)
This chassis, 82EM, was one of the two armoured cars in the film ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962), the other was 68RM.
Before this excitement 82EM lived as a ‘Woody’ in the dusty seclusion of a redundant Petrol station near Southampton.
Almost unbelievably these two well travelled Ghosts now live within forty miles of each other in remote Scotland, both as tourers."
