Some weeks ago Otto Tenge from Holland bought a rolling chassis of a Benova. Little is known about this make and very few seem to have survived. In 2001 we had an article about it, but that produced little or no results. However, we did find the Benova in Georgano’s encyclopedia who lists this make under the name Benjamin. They were small cars made in France from 1921-1931. The 1926 models had a 945 cc Chapuis-Dornier side valve engine or an 1100 cc ohv. Around 1927 the name Benjamin was dropped and the make reappeared as the Benova. Otto would very much like to know if there is another Benova around: a car that he can look at and to get to know the problems he will be facing. Does someone know of such an example? Contact us (RB)
Update III: Nicolas Boissier informs us of an article about the Benjamin/Benova that he wrote with Marc Douëzy for The Automobile. It was published in the July 2006 and August 2006 issues. They might still be available (click!).
Update II: Michael Buller from Germany tells us that he has just bought a Benjamin type B with a Chapuis-Dornier 1.1 engine. See and hear it run on his blog (click!).
Update I: There are still several Benova’s as we’ve had several tips on where to find one. There are at least two torpedos in the suburbs of Paris; one fixed Head coupe in the middle of France and one Benova Sport in Sweden and one in Belgium. There’s also a Benjamin in Holland. Thanks to Bruce Sandeman-Craik; Mathieu Gras and Gerard Lansink. From Switzerland we received the details of chassisnr. 60500 which is very close to this one.
