Independence

First we didn't know why the transparant Pontiac gave us the association with independence. But of course it is the independence of creativity that was at the cradle of this amazing show model.  Is it  coincidence that the bonnet is crowned with the Pontiac Indian. Yet another people that has always loved their independence. All nations seek independence. All thinking individuals seek independence.

This 1939 Pontiac Plexiglas Deluxe Six "Ghost Car" is one surviving example of two plexiglass cars that were built in a cooperation between General Motors and the Rohm & Haas company that had invented Plexiglas in 1934.

The car is expected to fetch a few hundred thousand dollars, which seems a lot for a show model of a family saloon, but in fact is peanuts for what it is . Taking the object let's say a hundred years further,  it will proove to be one of the best investments in industrial art. This 'Ghost Car' trancends the product it was meant to demonstrate by far. It is a small step for a scientist, yet a giant leap for the industry. We may be wrong - and we state this without much historical research - but we see the car as the most important  The Milestone for introducing the use of plastics in the car industry. Like or not, that's Independence. (lot No. 156, RM Auctions, St.John's July 30)

Totally agree with your evaluation of its worth. It will seem like such a primitive artifact in a hundred years, but its place in history will be assured. It looks so fresh? It does seem to have taken a hit to the RHF fender though! Tim

WOW !
This is much, much better than any "cut open" drawing (which are a beauty in their own right)
