Is she or isn’t she? (Upd.: Different fenders, different cowl)

That is the question, we thought when we saw this early photo of a Stanley Steamer. We are not sure but indeed we think it is the same Stanley Steamer that will be auctioned by Worldwide Auctioneers during The Auburn Auction on September 3rd. It’s a 1911 20 HP Model 72, which offered the best of all worlds in that they were powerful enough to carry several passengers but not as powerful or tough to control as the 30 horsepower models were. This Stanley was restored in 1990 which made it good enough to be shown at Pebble Beach. For reasons unknown to us, this Stanley will be auctioned by order of the State of Kansas Superior Court who have ordered the car be sold with No Reserve, meaning that the highest bidder will have the only known surviving Model 72 Stanley in existence. But our question remains… is the one offered by Worldwide the same as the one on our photograph?

It's hard to say. We don't know the chassis number of the car in the photo. There were 25 Model 72s built, from March to June 1911. Stanleys were surprisingly popular in Iowa.
