“Just another neat run” (Update: new edwardian record for 1905 V8 Darracq)

The fastest ever run by a pre-war car at the VSCC's Prescott Speed Hill Climb (held on August 7-8) was made by James Baxter. Driving his 3500cc 1934 Frazer Nash single seater he made a superb climb up the VSCC course (which omits the Orchard loop) in 40.81 seconds, smashing the previous 1989 pre-war record of 41.11 seconds that was set by Anthony Mayman, driving an ERA R4D. James had already broken the record on his Sunday morning run with a time of 40.92 seconds, but said he was “just going to aim for another neat run” in the afternoon session. Which he did, shaving a further eleven hundreds of a second off his earlier time.

Even more impressive than James Baxter's run was the first timed run by Mark Walker in the newly restored 1905 200HP Darracq, which took a stunning four seconds off the Edwardian course record. Mark's restoration of the Darracq is quite the best such piece of work I have ever seen, faithfully capturing the spirit and substance of the original car which briefly held the Land Speed Record at the end of 1905, and was subsequently campaigned by the Guiness brothers, Algernon and Kenelm.
