Kick-start the Carden (Upd. Not Arnott & Willenden)

A rather unknown car is the Carden, made by John Carden. He was an enthusiast for ultra-light aircraft who in 1913 also started building a series of cyclecars in his Farnham workshop. At first his cars had a single cylinder JAP engine which was replaced by a twin in later models. In 1922 Carden sold his business to Arnott & Willesden who continued the cyclecar production but now under the name of “New Carden”. They enlarged the hood to make it look more powerful but did not change the engine. Not many were made and production was stopped in 1925. There are also very little survivors, so it was a surprise to see this 1923 New Carden being offered by Herefordshire Vintage Auctions on March 9th. It is for sale because the present owner finds the kick-start mechanism rather too energetic. But not to worry, included in the sale of the New Carden is an original copy of ‘Driving and Running Instructions for the New Carden Light Car’!
