Le Tour de France: not that much has changed in 100 years

Congratulations to Geraint Thomas for winning the 2018 edition of the Tour de France. Today is the last day, more a ceremonial little tour so we believe we can congratulate the winner.

We enjoyed watching the cyclists for the last couple of weeks. It was once again a big show which is not only about cycling but also about the whole show around it. The sponsor vehicles, the team leaders in their cars, the mechanics and doctors.

We were curious how it was back in the days and found a photograph of the Tour de France race of 1914. As you can see, not that much has changed. We see just one cyclist (Jean Alavoine) with at least 4 cars behind him. Only the number of spectators has changed.

We hope you enjoyed the Tour just as much we did and wish you a good Sunday!

Great idea to take a look at the early days of the Tour de France - including the cars which accompanied these brave men already back then. Scan quality is rather poor, but not your fault, of course.

I've attached an original press photo (copyright: New York Times) from my collection showing the cyclists Maes and Verwecke (from Belgium or the Netherlands, I guess) during the Tour de France of 1936 in the French city of La Turbie just above the microstate of Monaco.

They are accompanied by one of the most-advanced and most-elegant mass-produced European cars of that time - a Peugeot 402.
Gone are the days, but thanks to prewar.com and a great community of prewar enthusiasts we can still enjoy their afterglow...

What nothing changed! I don't think they now have bikes with wooden wheels or brakes made of cork! But a great event to be there.
